Teachers step up to help Polokwane volleyball star reach nationals

After securing his place in Limpopo's provincial volleyball team, Itumeleng Maponya received an extra boost from his teachers, who contributed towards his trip to the National School Sports Championships.

POLOKWANE – Myngenoegen English Private School (MEPS) is celebrating after learner Itumeleng Maponya was officially sent off to represent Limpopo at the National School Sports Championships that will be held in KuGompo next week.

Earning his place on merit

Itumeleng earned his place in the provincial first team volleyball squad after impressive performances at school, club and district level.

The talented learner had to cut short his participation in the school’s winter programme to join his provincial teammates as they prepare for the national championships.

“Bigger than one child”

Principal Sandy Pitsi said the achievement was a proud moment for the entire school.

“This moment is bigger than one child. It is a testament to what discipline, guidance and opportunity can produce. We are proud to send Itu off with the full support of the MEPS family, and we trust he will represent himself, his school and Limpopo with dignity,” he said.

Pitsi described Itumeleng as a young leader who reflects the values the school strives to instil.

“Itumeleng has distinguished himself through consistent hard work, remarkable skill and exemplary conduct both on and off the court. He embodies discipline, humility and ambition.”

Staff step in to cover costs

He also praised the school’s staff for supporting the learner ahead of his trip.

“The MEPS staff rallied behind Itu with contributions to make his trip more comfortable. Some of his expenses were not covered, so the academic staff stepped in to assist,” Pitsi said.

“Discipline opens doors”

He wished Itumeleng well as he prepares to compete against the country’s top young volleyball players.

“His journey is an inspiration to all MEPS learners. Discipline opens doors, and excellence creates opportunities. Achievements like this show the importance of developing learners academically, socially and athletically.”

A team effort

MEPS also thanked Itumeleng’s coaches, including school and circuit coach Charles Chikunguru, as well as his teachers, parents and everyone who supported him.

“The school remains committed to producing young leaders who will shape the future of South Africa with excellence and integrity,” Pitsi said.

My name is Anne Mametja. I am a mom of four and an identical twin. With a passion for media, I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Media and Television Production in 2012 and due to my love for children, I also hold a certificate in Nursing Auxiliary. As media is my first love, I started working at the Polokwane Review as a journalist in 2017 and it has been amazing thus far. I love journalism because I can be a voice to the community through my work. Journalism allows me to meet different people at the events I attend. Although there are certain beats that journalists stick to, being an all-rounder means I write community, schools, sports, hard, lifestyle and entertainment news. It also allows me to be versatile in the newsroom and assist where I can. ‘Journalism can never be silent, that is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault.’
