POLOKWANE – The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has warned motorists to expect high traffic volumes on the N1 and other major routes across the province this Friday (July 24).

The department said increased traffic is expected as people travel between areas to spend time with loved ones and attend to various activities over the weekend. Motorists have been urged to plan their journeys carefully, travel on time and remain cautious throughout their trip.

Increased law enforcement presence

In response to the anticipated surge, the department has deployed traffic law enforcement officers across key routes, weighbridges and toll plazas to improve visibility, ensure rapid response to incidents and help keep traffic flowing where possible.

Patience urged at toll plazas

Road users have been urged to exercise patience, tolerance and cooperation, particularly at toll plazas where long queues are expected. The department warned that aggressive driving, queue-jumping, road rage and other reckless behaviour put lives at risk and contribute to unnecessary delays.

Safety tips for travellers

For their safety, travellers are encouraged to:

• Check that their vehicle is roadworthy, including tyres, brakes, lights and a valid licence disc
• Obey traffic laws, and avoid speeding, drinking and driving, overloading vehicles or using a cellphone while driving
• Get adequate rest before setting off and take regular breaks to avoid driver fatigue
• Plan journeys in advance and allow extra time for possible congestion
• Fasten seatbelts at all times, and ensure passengers do the same
• Keep a safe following distance and stay alert throughout the journey

The department wished all road users safe travels, adding that road safety remains a shared responsibility.
