Noorderland Gr 8 hockey star shines at national tournaments
Noorderland High School learner Shalom Kgaabi represented Limpopo at two national hockey tournaments, captaining her team at one.
POLOKWANE – Gr 8 learner Shalom Kgaabi of Noorderland High School proudly represented both Limpopo and her school at the 2026 Sashoc u/14 regional tournament in Krugersdorp and the 2026 Winter National School Sport Championships in KuGompo City.
The talented hockey player earned her place in the provincial team after progressing through two rounds of trials. A third round determined the final A and B teams.
A great experience
“I am honoured to have had the opportunity to represent my province and my school at both tournaments. I was nervous when I was selected as captain for the 2026 Winter National School Sport Championships, but I remained calm and became more confident with every game. Being captain was a great experience,” she said.
Hard work and dedication
Shalom said she worked hard to secure her place in the team, attending regular practices to maintain her form ahead of the national championships.
Competing against the country’s top players was challenging, but she said the experience was rewarding.
“There was a lot of tough competition from the other provinces, but there were also many special moments, like making new friends and scoring two goals in one half during two chukkers,” she said.
Shalom said the tournaments taught her valuable lessons both on and off the field.
“To enjoy playing sport, you need to have fun and not let your emotions get the better of you. Above all, give it your all on the field, and when you fail, never give up.”
