POLOKWANE – The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has urged motorists to be extra cautious on the roads as the province prepares for increased traffic volumes during the busy month-end and voter registration weekend.

The department expects traffic to increase from today, July 31, to Saturday, August 1, with several factors contributing to the anticipated congestion.

Factors expected to cause delays

According to department spokesperson Mashudu Mabata, month-end travel, salary payments and the Electoral Commission’s voter registration weekend are all expected to result in heavier traffic on major routes.

Motorists travelling on the N1 northbound from Gauteng into Limpopo are likely to experience increased traffic as many people return home for the weekend.

Shopping centres across the province are also expected to be busier as residents do their month-end shopping.

The department said additional traffic is anticipated on provincial, district and municipal roads as people travel to register in preparation for the upcoming local government elections.

Obey traffic laws

Road users have been urged to remain patient and obey traffic laws, especially during delays, particularly at toll plazas, on Friday.

The department also reminded motorists not to speed, drive recklessly or operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, and encouraged drivers to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before travelling.

Law enforcement on high alert

Traffic law enforcement officers, Saps and other stakeholders will be deployed on major routes and around shopping centres to manage traffic and enhance public safety throughout the weekend.
