Limpopo premier monitors Zebediela Citrus Estate revival
Zebediela was once a global benchmark in citrus production, exporting premium Limpopo fruit to Europe before financial troubles brought it to its knees.
MOKOPANE – The Premier, Dr Phophi Ramathuba recently conducted an unannounced visit to Zebediela Citrus Estate to assess progress in efforts to restore the once-thriving agricultural giant to its former glory.
Monitoring the revitalisation plan
According to the Office of the Premier, the visit formed part of ongoing monitoring of the farm’s revitalisation programme and master plan aimed at rebuilding its operations and returning it to its former status.
Once a global citrus benchmark
Zebediela Citrus Estate was once regarded as a global benchmark in citrus production, exporting premium fruit to European markets.
Before its collapse due to severe financial mismanagement, the farm was one of the largest citrus producers in the southern hemisphere and played a significant role in Limpopo’s economy.
700 jobs created since March
The revival efforts have already resulted in employment opportunities for local residents, with the farm currently employing 700 people since March.
Among those who have returned are former employees who left when the farm collapsed and have since been re-employed.
Ramathuba commends progress
During her visit, Ramathuba engaged with the farm’s management and workers, commending them for the progress made and their efforts towards rebuilding the farm.
The Premier’s Office said the ongoing revitalisation seeks to restore Zebediela Citrus Estate as an important contributor to the province’s agricultural sector and local economy.
