LIMPOPO – A head-on collision has claimed five lives on the R524 road, just 5km outside Louis Trichardt in the Makhado Municipality, Vhembe District.

The crash involved five vehicles, including a Saps vehicle, according to the Department of Transport. However, other reports indicate that only two vehicles were involved.

Five dead, two injured

Five people were certified dead on the scene, while two others sustained injuries – one critically and one seriously – and were transported to hospital by private and government ambulances.

“On behalf of the Limpopo Government, I send heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, including colleagues in the South African Police Service, and also wish the injured ones a speedy recovery,” says MEC Kekana.

Road reopened

The R524 is now open as investigations and clearing continue. Motorists are urged to avoid the area and exercise extreme caution.

Cause under investigation

The cause of the crash will be investigated. The MEC once again urged drivers to always be cautious on the road by avoiding speeding, using roadworthy vehicles and avoiding reckless driving.
