Tommie of the year award goes to Kabura Abubakar
Tom Naudé's Kabura Abubakar was also awarded with the prestige award of sport girl of the year as well as the deserving sportsman of the year
POLOKWANE – Tom Naudé Technical High School recently hosted its award ceremony, celebrating learners who excel at school.
During this glamorous event, Gr 11 learner Kabura Abubakar was awarded the Tommie of the Year award.
According to the principal, Vanessa Kachelhoffer, the Tommie of the Year award is the school’s highest award and thus awards the greatest caution and objectivity.
“Candidates’ achievements are taken into consideration in the various spheres of the school life as reflected in the allocations made for the year. Only participation within the school mortgage is taken into consideration and any learner in the school may apply for this trophy.”
The candidate is assessed on only the past year’s achievements in academics, sport, culture, service councils and leadership. The learner must perform well in at least three of the categories.
Kabura’s achievements:
• Academically she achieved a score of 96% in EGD and 83% in life orientation.
• Netball: She took part in netball and Fast 5 Netball. She was part of the Limpopo u/17 team that represented the province at the All Ages tournament. She was also chosen as the captain of the team.
Kabura was one of 20 girls chosen to represent South Africa at the u/18 Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad this year, and was selected for the training group for the u/21 African Qualifier and World Cup Squad for 2024.
• Athletics: During the athletic season Kabura participated in the triple jump for girls u/17. She won the provincial championships and was chosen to represent Limpopo at the SA Athletic Championships where she won a gold medal in her age group. This means she is the best athlete in this event in South Africa.
• She was awarded honours in three categories.
• She achieved the prestige award of sport girl of the year as well as the deserving sportsman of the year.
• Kabura served as an RCL Help Council and was chosen as head girl for 2024.
