All systems go for national athletics meeting at UL
Tommy Kgomo director for school sport and recreation says Limpopo will be represented by 130 athletes from different schools in the province.
POLOKWANE – Tommy Kgomo, director for school sport and recreation at the Department of Sport, says all systems are ready to host the South African Primary Schools athletics meeting set for University of Limpopo from March 24 to 26.
Limpopo will be represented by 130 athletes from different primary schools in the province, who will contest for top honours with more than 3 000 athletes from eight provinces.
The Limpopo Primary School Athletics committee will deploy 200 marshals and 120 officials who will ensure the smooth running of the spectacle.
Kgomo said the event will boost tourism in the province. “Tourism and hospitality sector will benefit. We are expecting a lot of athletes from various provinces.”
He said the team will camp in Polokwane this week, ahead of the main event. “The team will train here in Polokwane and we will provide them with training kits, equipment and replenishments to ensure that they are ready for the event.”
Leon Maakamedi, chairperson of the Polokwane Athletics Committee and provincial athletics committee member said they are happy to have a strong representation of athletes from schools in the Polokwane cluster. “Laerskool Pietersburg-Oos is leading with athletes in the Polokwane cluster with 12 athletes, followed by Pietersburg Laerskool with five athletes while Pietersburg Comprehensive School has three athletes in the provincial team. We are proud of the athletes and their coaches. They have been working hard and they are reaping the fruits of their labour. We wish them the best of luck, they will be competing in their backyard. Their parents, the teachers and classmates will be there rallying behind them and we have no doubt that they will win gold medals in their respective disciplines.”
