Constable wins long jump champ title

CONST Glastone Shabangu (28) of the Crime Prevention Unit at Maake police station was crowned the long jump champion at the 8th SARPCCO Games

CONST Glastone Shabangu (28) of the Crime Prevention Unit at Maake police station was recently crowned the new long jump champion at the eighth Southern Africa Regional Police Chiefs’ Cooperation Organisation (SARPCCO) Games in Windhoek, Namibia.

Shabangu won a gold medal with a leap of 7.50m at the games, which took place from August 16 to 30.

He outperformed 29 athletes from 13 different Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries to claim the coveted title and set a new record.

Shabangu, who represented the country for the first time this year, said he looked forward to defending the title and setting a new record in 2015.

He qualified to represent the country in Namibia by jumping 6.98m at the South African Police Championships in Polokwane in March.

“Since I qualified, I have been working hard at training to improve my performance and it paid off in Namibia,” said Shabangu, who started participating in long jump in high school.

According to SARPCCO, the games, in which over 1 500 police member athletes compete in various sporting codes, were initiated at a SADC Police Chiefs meeting in Swakopmund in 1999, with the view of promoting regional friendship and regional cooperation through sport.

Since 2001, the regional police sport games have been held every second year, with South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Malawi and the Democratic Republic of Congo hosting the event.
