POLOKWANE – Two local golf players, Andrew Galloway and Duane Viljoen, did South Africa proud with a stunning performance at the world final of the 23rd Audi Quattro Cup at the Trump National Golf Course in the US on Friday.
They competed in the category Group Net A and walked away with the laurels in this category, while Guatemala won Group Net B.
“When we saw the entries from the 51 other countries, we really thought we were in for a tough tournament, because some of the players had better handicaps than us. After the first round, we were leading by three shots. In the second round, we made a pair at the 18th hole and from then on we knew that we had an excellent chance to win this event,” said Galloway.
He said his team mate, Viljoen, was the perfect partner to play with in this year’s Audi Quattro Cup tournament, because their style was similar. “Now I know precisely how the professional players feel when they compete over the world. We were really treated exceptionally and our hosts really treated us like royalty. It is an unbelievable feeling that still have to sink in,” Galloway said. Viljoen said he was just as pleased with their feat as his partner. “It was an awesome golf course to play on. When we arrived and noticed the quality of players in our group, Andrew and I decided we were going to play this event with the same attitude as when we played at Zimbali in the South African final. We were going to have fun and enjoy it.” Viljoen added that this accolade was surely his biggest achievement in this sport.
“My partner has a mean drive and I am good with putting, so I really think we complimented each other well in this year’s Audi Quattro Cup, from the regional round right up to the final,” Viljoen added.
