Motorsport fans can brace themselves for this year’s third edition of the Polokwane Motor Rally this weekend.
This is also the penultimate round of the South African rally championships.
The rally cars’ performance on the dirt roads promises to be an exhilarating experience for racing fans who will enjoy seeing the cars racing past at break neck speeds.
Competitors will parade through Polokwane from the Peter Makoba Sports Complex to the municipal buildings on the corner of Bodenstein and Kerk Streets at 11:00 tomorrow (Friday).
From the sports complex, the cars will drive down Biccard Street and will proceed to Hospital Street. Here the cars will turn left in Hospital Street and drive towards Landros Maré Street, where they will turn left and drive down towards Bodenstein Street. In Bodenstein Street, the cars will turn right towards Church Street and in Church Street, they will turn left and immediately right again into the designated parking area.
The first car will be flagged away at 12:00 from Church Street.
Freddy Greaver, mayor of Polokwane, is the driving force behind this initiative to establish the city as the sporting hub of Limpopo. This is the third and final year of this agreement between the Polokwane Municipality and Motorsport South Africa.
Greaver says he is eager to have this event back in the city in the future, but that it depended on the next council meeting.
The organisers of the rally and National Rally Championships representative, Richard Leeke, says they too want to have this event back on the calender in the future.
Leeke says the Polokwane Motor Rally could be a combined round of the African Rally Championships and the South African Championships.
