Cricketing aces

POLOKWANE – Four premier league teams from the city competed in cricket matches at the Polokwane Cricket Club on Sunday.

The rain dampened the full play of these encounters, with the Eagles against Stars Two match being stopped, while the Aces and Seshego match was reduced to a 28-over match.

Eagles batted first in their 50 overs to post a very competitive target of 279/4. Jaco Smit delivered a strong performance with the bat for Eagles with a stunning 85 runs from 54 balls.

He was well supported by Bradley Pieterse, who posted 68 runs from 86 balls and Pieter Haasbroek, who made 67 runs from 127 deliveries.

Stars Two was already in all sorts of trouble when rain stopped play in the 22nd over with only 108 runs on the board.

Stars Two had already lost eight wickets by then and Eagles won the match, which was alternatively determined by the highest batting run rate which Eagles won hands down.

The most notable bowler for Eagles was Hoërskool Pietersburg cricketer, Landré Coetsee, who scalped three Stars Two wickets for 28 runs in six overs.

In their match against Seshego, Aces batted first, setting 292 runs for the loss of eight wickets in 50 overs.

Due to the rain, the match was reduced to 28 overs with the revised target now 163 runs for Seshego to chase down in their reply.

Scores of note from Aces batsmen were from Jurie Fanoy, who impressed with his 63 runs from 74 deliveries and team mate Andy Müller, who scored a quick 37 runs from just 34 balls.

A thorn in the flesh of the Aces side from Seshego’s bowlers was Isaac Senetla, who took three wickets for 50 runs in nine overs.

In reply Seshego’s team was not up to the task and they fell by the wayside in chasing down the revised 163 runs, scoring 126 runs for the loss of 10 wickets in 24,4 overs.

Senetla once again proved why he was so vital to the Seshego side, as he put up a very brave fight with the bat to post a rapid 34 runs from only 39 balls.

But without the necessary support from his fellow batsmen, victory eluded them from the start of their innings with the bat.

Aces’ most notable bowler who caused the greatest damage in the Seshego batting innings, was Otto Müller, who claimed three wickets for 44 runs in just 5,4 overs.
