POLOKWANE – Petrus Kgopa (54) an athlete from Pietersburg Road Runners started running at the age of 45 to keep fit and to live healthy, and has won countless medals since he started participating in races.

“I feel relaxed after running, and keeping fit means I don’t get sick easily,” said Kgopa.

He competed in the 42,2 km race in the BMW Modern Autohaus 4-in-1 race on Saturday and finished the race in a time of 03:45:00.

He will compete in his first Comrades Marathon this year, with the club sponsoring his entry, travel and accommodation fees. They will also buy him the necessary running equipment.

“I will do my best at the Comrades and I know I will achieve the best I can,” said Kgopa. Kgopa usually takes part in 10 km and 21 km races and has won medals for competing in these categories.

Being a long distance runner for just over nine years, Kgopa has overcome most of the challenges in the sport and now finds every minute of it fun and relaxing.

“Young people should participate in sporting activities and keep away from harmful substances. This way, there will have more healthy people in the country.”
