Bull girl power

A total of 30 women from across Limpopo were selected to go through to the final selection for the Limpopo women's rugby squad.

POLOKWANE – A total of 30 women from across Limpopo were selected to go through to the final selection for the Limpopo women’s rugby squad.

The selection trials were held at the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex on Saturday.

Some 48 players turned up for the selection process, but only 30 were chosen. The team that will be selected at the final trials will go on to play in the South African Rugby Union inter-provincial women’s league third division, which will kick-off on May 3.

The rugby hopefuls played a game against the Blue Bulls women’s team to enable the scouts and team management to make their choices.

Douglas Modiba, Limpopo Blue Bulls women’s team senior manager said only 22 players would be selected for the final team.

“The players who don’t make the team will not be neglected or ignored, but will be used as substitutes,” he said.

Modiba said the squad of 30 had already started practise sessions. “I can see they are committed and ready to fight to win.”

He said the Limpopo women’s team would face North West, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape and Gauteng in their division.

“The team will play two away matches and two home games and if they win all these games, they will play in the finals. Two of the key players moved to Pretoria, but this won’t break the team as we have groomed players that can replace them. I think we will do very well this year as the management that was appointed has been working with these players from the grass roots level,” said Modiba.
