Big racing action this weekend
Motorsport fans can look forward to top notch racing action at the Polokwane Oval when the first leg of the National Championship will take place the Polokwane Show grounds on Saturday.
POLOKWANE – Motorsport fans can look forward to top notch racing action at the Polokwane Oval when the first leg of the National Championship will take place the Polokwane Show grounds on Saturday.
The classes that will compete in this event is the very popular Stockrods, where only a few modifications is allowed, and here setup on the car and driver skill is necessary to be at the front of the pack.
This class will be returning to National status after a couple of year’s absence due to a split in affiliations. Names to look out for on track is local competitors Tienie Kloppers, Willie Blignaut and Nico Grebe, that is setting the pace.
A number of out of town drivers will take part, and Eddie Bezuidenhout, Bart Jones and Petrus van Oord will be breathing in the locals’ neck to take the honours.
The 2.1litre Modified’s will run their first leg in the championship, with local Johnny Durant, current SA Champion, defending his title against fierce competition from local competitors like Roelof van Breda, Desmond Bosch and Haccum Hough.
Dewald Roos, Morne Nagel and Louis Coetzee wil travel from Klerksdorp to see if they can take the lead. Ettiene du Plessis will lead the Cape Town brigade, and here Francois Muller, currently third in SA, will try to better his result from last year, with fellow Capetownion Damien Miller also trying to upset the cards.
The screaming Rotary’s and a couple of high powered piston engines will also take to the track.
The Hotrods is the most expensive saloon class, and these cars can easily set you back R450 000. Rudy Myburg, multiple SA Champ and current SA number 1 and Neville Loosemore from Richardsbay, also a multiple SA Champ will take on Allas Pienaar and Stephan Weideman from Polokwane.
This will be very close racing, as everybody in this class have done some upgrades to their cars, and if you go according to the Regional Championship that was run earlier this year, nobody will give an inch, as this will be the highlight for the evening.
The show will be kicking off with an aerial display by the Gabriel aerobatic team, with 3 Pits Specials doing breathtaking maneuvers above the showground at around 15:30.
A lot of food stalls will be available, and racing is set to start at 16:00.
