POLOKWANE – Baroka FC finally ended their six match winless streak when they walloped African Warriors 5-1 in a National First Division (NFD) match played at the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Two goals each by captain Gift Mothupa and Victor Letsoalo as well as the first half strike by Donald Mokondelela gave Baroka the belief that they could topple Golden Arrows who they were due to meet at the Chatsworth Stadium at the time of going to print yesterday (Wednesday). The win over Warriors was Baroka’s second in the current season and their first one at home. Their first win came courtesy of a 1-0 score line away to Royal Eagles on August 22. Head coach of Baroka, Sello Chokoe said he was delighted with the win, saying it could not have come at a better time. He said the confidence of his players had reached an all-time low after a string of poor results. “We have used the Fifa International break to correct our mistakes and beef up our fitness. I believe we are the fittest team in the NFD and the win against Warriors will help our players regain their confidence. It is a pity that our two-goal hero Victor will not be with us as he will be sitting for his final matric exams but we will do our best to build from our victory and go out for three points against Arrows,” Chokoe said.
Chokoe had dropped number one goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke and opted for debutante Tyson Mukeka who got the crowd behind him by making acrobatic saves to deny Warriors any chance on goals. Mosate, as Baroka are known these days, are in a race against time to get their experienced defender Olaleng Shaku fit for the duel against Arrows. Shaku limped off the field against Warriors but Chokoe is confident that his veteran centre back will be available to marshal his defence.
Matches are coming thick and fast in the NFD with Baroka FC having to play Jomo Cosmos at the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex on Sunday. The other Limpopo NFD club Black Leopards are licking their wounds following a 1-0 loss to Royal Eagles on Friday night.
