Sports trials in city

Intellectually impaired learners from across the province participated in trials for various sporting codes, which were held at different venues in the city last Wednesday.

POLOKWANE – Intellectually impaired learners from across the province participated in trials for various sporting codes, which were held at different venues in the city last Wednesday.

Learners participated in sporting codes such as black ball, cricket, swimming, indoor rowing and hocker, a combination of soccer and hockey.

The learners who were selected would represent the province during the national summer games for the intellectually impaired, which were scheduled for March next year in Cape Town.

Limpopo came second at last year’s tournament.

Richard Lebepe, provincial spokesperson for the South African Sports Association for the Intellectually Impaired, said the province did exceptionally well last year.

“We will prepare our players thoroughly for next year’s championships,” said Lebepe.

He said they recruited top coaches who were willing to work with the learners.

Rocky Makgoka, New Horizon School sports organiser, said the trials were well attended, although some schools could not attend due to unforeseen circumstances.

She said she was certain that the learners would excel in next year’s tournament.
