Fighters end at the top

HEAD coach of Madiba City Fighters FC, William Ledwaba, said he was happy with his club's performance during the Aganang Mayor's Cup soccer tournament last Saturday.

HEAD coach of Madiba City Fighters FC, William Ledwaba, said he was happy with his club’s performance during the Aganang Mayor’s Cup soccer tournament last Saturday.

Fighters walked away with the cup and R25 000 after the team beat Kickers FC 2-1 in the final round of this tournament.

With a great tournament behind the team, Fighters only needed a 1-0 victory over Romans FC from Ga-Matlala to book a place in the final. Although Romans tried every trick in the book to swing the scales, Fighters beat them 2-1 and moved on swiftly to the final.

Ledwaba said his team was ecstatic over their win, especially after they worked so hard throughout the season to deliver their best game every time. “With our prize money we want to buy official new jerseys for the team. We want to make sure that our boys always look good,” he said.

“Now we harvest the fruit of our hard work, discipline and commitment. Now we want to challenge the best teams from other towns. Our dream is to eventually become the best team in Limpopo.”

Besides Madiba City Fighters FC’s prize of R25 000 as winners of the tournament, Kickers FC also won R15 000 for second place. Future FC won R2 500 for third place and Romans FC won R2 000 for fourth place in the tournament.

Aganang councillors, Teffo Malesela and Steven Phaka, both spoke at the prize-giving ceremony and said the aim of the Aganang Mayor’s Cup tournament was to discover talented soccer players in the rural villages.

They also said the tournament was meant to keep the young players busy with practises and games to keep them from substance abuse and crime. “We congratulate the teams that participated in this year’s tournament. You all brought your best to the field and the standard was very high. We plan to host more tournaments in the future with more teams competing and fantastic prizes up for grabs,” Phaka said.
