Older villagers stay fighting fit

BAKGEKULU and Bakgalabje Football Club from Makgofe village aims to keep the elderly fit and healthy.

LIMPOPO – BAKGEKULU and Bakgalabje Football Club from Makgofe village aims to keep the elderly fit and healthy.

Rachel “Koko Lepho-disa” Ramodike (53) is the founder of the club and says there were only 10 players when they started, but they now have 40 players who train every day.

“I established the club in December last year after I realised the elderly have nothing to keep them busy,” says Ramodike.

“We focus on their fitness so that they can play better soccer and live healthier lives.”

Koko Lephodisa says one of the challenges they face is a lack of resources such as a first aid kit, cones, balls, whistles and a playing kit.

“My wish is to see this team progress. Some people criticise me, while others call me and ask me who I think I am. But I am happy that the people I work with are positive,” she says.

She ads that the team is not only for the elderly as there are young people who train with the older players to keep fit.

“We involve young people from as young as the age of six to keep them busy after school.”

“Being part of the team has helped me a lot. I have no high blood pressure and my sugar levels are down. I hardly get sick anymore and I feel fit,” says one of the players, Mary-Jane Mokatse (56).

Koko Lephodisa appeals to the community to help them with the resources they need.

Anyone willing to assist the team can contact her at 079 043 3125.
