City FC get it right
POLOKWANE City FC head coach, Kostadin Papic, said another three points would secure their status in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
POLOKWANE – POLOKWANE City FC head coach, Kostadin Papic, said another three points would secure their status in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
Papic spoke after City FC thrashed Bloemfontein Celtic 3-0 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The win was historic in many ways for the local team.
Rise and Shine, as City FC are known, kept their first clean sheet in 10 matches.
The last time City FC did not concede a goal was when they played to a 0-0 draw against Kaizer Chiefs on November 25 last year. With the three goals against Celtic, City FC have joined Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates as the league’s top scorers with 34 goals each.
They also broke Celtic’s unbeaten run since coach Clinton Larsen took over from Ernst Middendorp last year.
As if that was not enough reason to celebrate, City FC have become the first club to score against Bloemfontein Celtic in 2015.
City FC were officially handed a R1,5 million cheque for winning the PSL Q2 Innovation contest.
Asked how he finally got it right, Papic said the team was tactically disciplined and, although they were not where he wanted them to be yet, they applied themselves on the day.
“We finally got it right. I do not know when we last kept a clean sheet, but I am happy that we finally prevented our opponents from scoring.
“The players are not naïve anymore. We should have scored more goals, but I am satisfied with three goals and three points.
“We are not safe from relegation yet, but three more points will guarantee us a stay in the PSL,” Papic said.
City FC, who are now in position seven with 32 points from 23 matches, will have a three-week fixture break and will only play their next league match against Bidvest Wits on April 4 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.
