Limpopo boxing fraternity asks BSA for local official

LIMPOPO boxers and promoters asked Boxing South Africa (BSA) to stop deploying officials from other provinces to work as BSA provincial managers in their province.

LIMPOPO – LIMPOPO boxers and promoters asked Boxing South Africa (BSA) to stop deploying officials from other provinces to work as BSA provincial managers in their province.

The boxers and promoters spoke out during a boxing indaba that was held in Thohoyandou on Sunday.

Local promoters said BSA’s deployment of managers from other provinces to manage Limpopo’s boxing affairs was killing boxing in the province.

They explained that the so-called outsiders did not understand the challenges and dynamics of boxing in this province.

“We need a person who has the development and growth of boxing at heart,” one boxer, who did not wish to be named, said.

A promoter, who also wished to remain anonymous, said that Limpopo had to cope without a provincial manager for four years after the departure of boxing great, Abram Kambule.

“There is a breakdown in communication between us and BSA. We don’t even know why Kambule left,” he said.

“Other provinces have their own provincial managers, why must we be satisfied with leadership from outside Limpopo? Other provinces receive funding from the government, but Limpopo boxing has to make do. We want to be treated equally and fairly. We want our fair share.”

The promoter also said it was sad to see Limpopo’s top boxers training in Gauteng, as there were no other options for them.

BSA official, Dr Malefetsane Peter Ngatane, promised to table the issues that the Limpopo boxing fraternity raided before the BSA board.

He asked the boxers and promoters present at the indaba to submit the name of the person they deem fit for the role of provincial manager.

BSA senior administration manager, Masilo Maake, said Limpopo’s problem was not unique as other provinces also struggled without permanently appointed managers.

He said other provinces received financial support from government because they were organised with their own managers and boxing associations.

“If you form an association, BSA will endorse that association,” said Maake.
