Desmond now boasts mayoral title
"I put a lot of time in training to win. I am going to invest the money in future investment because running is my only job. I am a full-time runner".
POLOKWANE – SCORES of athletes sweated through the pain barrier during the grueling annual Mayoral Race at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Saturday.
In the main 21km race, Desmond Mokgobu of Boxer Athletic Club in Durban crossed the finish line in first place in a time of 1:04:52 to walk away with R10 000.
The 26-year-old said: “I put a lot of time in training to win. I am going to invest the money in future investment because running is my only job. I am a full-time runner”.
Mokgobu originates from Senwabarwana, but stays in Gauteng.
In his glorious athletics career, he has been to almost all the provinces and overseas to participate in flagship races.
Women in the 21km race were led by Louisa Leballo (37) of Transet Club who clocked 1: 17: 03 to win the R10 000 first prize.
The mother of three from Bram Fischer in Soweto was visibly on cloud nine about her victory.
“I am from an injury and my body is recovering well hence this victory. I am very happy with my overall performance.
“Last week I won the Bojanala Marathon,” said Leballo.
