Young gymnasts in top form at national games

The gymnasts from Zanis Gymnastics Academy recently competed against 4 000 gymnasts in the National Gym Games in Gauteng.

POLOKWANE – The gymnasts from Zanis Gymnastics Academy recently competed against 4 000 gymnasts in the National Gym Games in Gauteng.

A total of 27 gymnasts from Zanis took part in the games and each of them brought home a medal – eight gold medals, 10 silver medals and nine bronze medals.

The Zanis artistic boys gymnasts proved to be on top of their game as they claimed a total of 18 out of the 27 medals. Deon Kriel added to the already impressive Zanis performances by scoring a total of 9,9 out of 10 for the high bar, making it the highest apparatus score of the games.

The top boys performers for Zanis during the tourament were:

• Eduanique Harmse – overall first in the level four age 13-17 category, with gold on the floor and silver on the high bar.

• Martin Botha – overall second in the level four age 9-10 category, with a silver medal on the p-bars and a bronze medal on the pommel horse.

• Deon Kriel – overall silver with a gold medal on the high bar and floor, and silver on the p-bars.

• Liam Botha – overall third in the level five age 15-17 category, with silver on the pommel horse and bronze on the high bar.

• Kyle Herz – silver on the p-bars and bronze on the pommel horse.

In the artistic girls category, Callin Menzies won the uneven bars with a score of 9,7 out of 10. She finished third overall in the level four, age nine category.

Sanja Pretorius won silver in the level five age 13-17 category on the beam.

In Rhythmic Gymnastics, Monene Kelly finished third overall in the level six age 15 category with a gold medal in clubs.

In the trampoline gymnastics, the Zanis gymnasts shined in the mini-trampoline section. Leandre du Preez won gold for the age 13-14, Veronique Lessing won gold in the age nine category, Deandro du Preez won silver in the age 10 category, and Duncan Tilburn won bronze in the age 11-12 category.

Zanis Gymnastics did exceptionally well at the North Zone Gymnastics Competition in Pretoria recently where they competed in the level one and two trampoline categories. All of the eight gymnasts excelled by receiving medals in all their categories.
