Mayoral Golf day tees off to benefit disadvantaged children

The Annual Mayoral Charity Golf Day took place at the Polokwane Golf Club on Thursday, 30 November and golfers came out in their numbers to enjoy a day filled with social golfing.

POLOKWANE – In 2017, the day raised more than R900 000, which was a major boost for the mayor’s bursary fund. To date, 179 students have benefitted from the bursary fund. This year alone, 52 students received bursaries.

In Polokwane, sport has been the greatest contributor to the Mayor’s Bursary Fund through various partnerships that have benefited disadvantaged learners and charity organisations.

Polokwane Mayor, Thembi Nkadimeng said the golf day is held in the spirit of trying to take care of young people who profit from the day.

“We are almost at R800 000, and I am told that there is more money coming in. Our target was R1 million and I hope we will be able to reach it so that we can adopt 50 learners in addition to the 217 that we have already helped. We help young people who are studying at universities and FET Colleges who are residents of Limpopo, but in particularly coming from the Polokwane Municipal area,” said Nkadimeng.

The MEC for Social Development Mapula Mokaba-Phukwana hit the golf during the Mayoral Golf Day.

She said the Mayoral Bursary Fund looks for learners who have great potential, but cannot afford to study due to financial constrains, or who come from child headed households.

“We adopt them and offer them a full scholarship to study. The bursary scheme is doing very well: 14 medical students have graduated and are now part of the Department of Health. We are looking forward to this year’s graduates who will be joining the working fields,” she said.
