Fighting spirit secures victory for Baroka
A dominating performance by Bakgakga led to Limpopo-based Baroka FC securing a 2-1 victory over Durban based Maritzburg United at the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex on Sunday.
POLOKWANE – Reeling from a loss against Stellenbosch FC at Athlone Stadium and Maritzburg United celebrating a win over Amazulu FC, Bakgakga dominated the match from the first minute.
Ethen Sampson opened the scoring in the 44th minute and Baroka led after the first half.
An equalising goal from Maritzburg came from Judas Mosemaedi in the 49th minute.
Tshediso Patjie sealed the deal when he capitalised on Maritzburg’s defenders by scoring the winning goal in the 89th minute.
Baroka FC’s assistant coach, Matsimela Thoka said they controlled the game from the beginning.
“There was a fighting team spirit among the boys and we scored two good goals,” he said.
Maritzburg United head coach, Eric Tinkler said their performance was poor and attributed it to the players not showing a hunger to win.
“We created opportunities but didn’t optimise on them. I made a change and brought Phumlani Ntshangse on, thinking playing two midfielders would work, but we were outplayed,” he said.
Baroka FC’s next game is against Highlands Park FC at the Makhulong Stadium in Thembisa.
