All systems go for Seshego Marathon

Seshego Stadium will be a hive of activity when it hosts the inaugural 50km marathon on May 1.

POLOKWANE – About 1 500 runners from different clubs in the country are expected to exchange paces and set new records for themselves at the marathon.

According to marathon administrator Leban Kgomo, the marathon will commence at Paledi Mall and will culminate at the Seshego Stadium. In addition to the 50km race, there will also be a 21.1km race and 5km fun run which will send the runners around the Seshego Stadium precinct.

“The marathon will start at 05:30 on Saturday and 25 marshals will be deployed at strategic points and turn offs along the R71 road via Polokwane to Seshego. Replenishment will be served to the athletes along the routes according to their needs. Police and traffic officials from Mankweng, Polokwane and Seshego clusters will man the routes,” Kgomo explained.

He advised athletes to leave their vehicles at Seshego Stadium. “There will be buses to ferry the athletes to Paledi Mall on the day. The buses will leave Seshego Stadium at 04:00 and stop at Savannah Mall to collect athletes based in the city. We look forward to an exciting event. The winner of the 50km marathon, which will also serve as a Comrades qualifier, will pocket R50 000 in cash prize and the 21km winner will take home R5 000.”

Kgomo added the registration for the marathon is still open until April 30. “Race numbers can be collected at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on April 29 from 09:00–17:00 and Seshego Stadium on April 30 from 09:00–22:00. No race numbers will be issued on the day of the race.
