Ying-Yang Karatekas host gradings in preparation of tournaments

Held at the Zurel College dojo in Ladanna, the students were tested on kihon (basics), katas (movements), kumite (sparring), ippon-kumite (semi-fighting), fitness and knowledge on Japanese terminology.

POLOKWANE – Ying-Yang Karate and self-defense studio’s karatekas are gearing up for the upcoming national and international karate tour competitions and in preparation, recently hosted respective inter-grading sessions.

All karatekas passed on both occasions while three of them received medals for performing distinctively in the second grading. The medalists are Sepai Zala Janse van Rensburg (three brown belts), McKayla Nel (three brown belts) and Lethabo Dikgale (brown). On the other hand, Luan Christie was selected as the best junior candidate during the second session.

A karate grading is a measure of the level of attainment of a student. Each grade is signified by a different coloured belt, starting with the white belt and progressing to black. Below the black belt, grades are referred to as Kyu while Black Belts are called Dan.

Held at the Zurel College dojo in Ladanna, the students were tested on kihon (basics), katas (movements), kumite (sparring), ippon-kumite (semi-fighting), fitness and knowledge on Japanese terminology.

But what made the first grading even more phenomenal for the Dojo was the participation of three generations from the Brown family, who included the grandmother, son, daughter-in-law and grandchild. They have upgraded to brown belts.

Participants on the first grading also included Aden Janse Van Rensburg, Retha Janse Van Rensburg, Aryna Nel, Lwafika Nonjojo, Richard Tiltman and Catherine Korf. Participants on the second grading included Senpai Chad Sacco, Jaco Vorster, Wickus Viljoen, Erika Rupping, Donavan Tshabalala and Taelo Phakathi.
