Caddies switch roles for a round of golf

Club captain Fred Hurter says part of their mission at the golf club is to get involved in transformation and integrate players.

MOKOPANE- The Polokwane Golf Club gave caddies affiliated to their club as well as those from Turfloop a platform to showcase their talent at the Inter-Provincial Club Caddies Day held at the club on May 8.

The event saw caddies switching roles and putting themselves in the role of golfers. The group showcased their long drives, birdies and putts on the pristine greens.

Saki Makhafola and Joseph Dikgale were announced as the winners of the event after amassing 84 IPS gross scores each. They shared a cash prize and a floating trophy.

Dikgale said it was good to switch roles for a change.

“It was a good initiative by the club to reach out to us and give us a day to enjoy. We are ready to play regularly because we love this sport.”

Elias Maficha said they enjoyed playing long range shots with their mates.

“Golf is our favourite sport, it encourages communication and a healthy lifestyle. We were able to network and create friendships. Even when we are performing a carrying role, we are able to talk to our bosses. They consult us on the course and we develop a working relationship. There are a lot of benefits to playing golf.”

The day was initiated by one of the staff members at the club, Karabo Moalamedi with a keen interest in golf and looking to get the caddies of the Limpopo golf courses competing against one another.

Fred Hurter, Polokwane Golf Club captain said the idea of transformation is driven by the Polokwane Golf Club in conjunction with the club’s new exco.

“Part of our mission as the Polokwane Golf Club is to get involved in transformation and integrate players, and we want to start with our caddies. We used to have Caddies Day on Mondays but that changed after Covid-19. We want to revive that programme and get caddies playing regularly and put them in a position where they enjoy the game.

“We want to get membership for them in future.”

Hurter said the club will stage another provincial caddies golf event in June.

“We want to make it even bigger this time, and we are calling for sponsors to come on board and assist caddies with equipment and apparel.”
