Bad day for Polokwane City after 2-0 loss

Stellenboch Football Club dominated the match from the first whistle resulting in a 2-0 loss for Polokwane City.

POLOKWANE – Polokwane City Football Club’s hopes of lifting the maiden trophy in the Premier Soccer League were dashed after they were eliminated by Stellenbosch Football Club in a Carling Black Label match with a loss of 2-0 at the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex on Friday.

Stellenboch dominated the match from the first whistle with Kgaugelo Sekgota and Rayners Iqraam, and Devin Titus Ryhane Ryners dictating the terms in the field of play.

Their efforts were rewarded in the sixth minute when Ryners found the opening goal to give his team a 1-0 lead.

The Western Cape outfit increased their tally in the 16th minute when their goalkeeper, Sage Stephens unleashed a long pass that saw Devin Titus run through City defenders to score the winning goal.

City created few chances throughout the match but they were still unable to convert them.

“We wanted to win the match but it was not to be. They scored early and that rattled us but we were able to regroup and unfortunately we could not score. We made lots of mistakes at the back and we did not communicate well.

“We are sad to have to leave the competition like that but our focus remains the league matches. We started the league well and we want to continue with the same kind of form.”
