Polokwane Squash Club gets a facelift

POLOKWANE – The Polokwane Squash Club has finally re-opened and is ready for players since the temporary closure for renovations since January 30.

The club management welcomed back players on February 16 who were all in disbelief at the new look.

Michael Ward from the club told Polokwane Observer that since the delay of the entire recreation centre repairs, the team had to revamp the club from their own pockets. “We realised that for the club to continue working, we had to take the initiative to start renovating. We welcomed our players back to a fresh, newly and decent club for them to play and practice in.”

On the outside of the building, the club members along with other individuals in the community repaired the roof sheeting, the flashings that were completely dislodged, the broken gutter and pipes, and mounted the cables that were on the roof, and cleaned and sealed all the weak spots with liquid plastic.

On the inside they painted all the courts and general areas, sanded and sealed the court floors, deep-cleaned and repaired the carpets, sanded down and varnished all the wood in the facility, installed new shower heads in the showers, repaired the stands, realigned the glass back courts, repaired the handles of the courts, installed WiFi, a sound system, a microphone system, and a live streaming service among many other renovations in the club.

“We’re still busy with the memory wall and are still redoing the art work and general look, lots of aesthetic projects are still ongoing. The main thing we cannot afford to implement are the coolers and we need them.

“We will appreciate the community’s assistance with this one. The other huge concern are the outside lights that don’t work and are always off. This poses a security threat towards the club members, especially the female players.”

Ward added that the club management has also hired staff to clean the area around the entire centre because of the state it is currently in.

He concluded that squash as a sport helps to maintain a healthy weight, increase flexibility and strength.

“It also promotes good coordination, agility and flexibility as well as build great hand-eye coordination, especially for younger players.”
