Mark Markgraff celebrates 100th ParkRun as timekeeper

As part of his milestone celebration, Markgraaff shared his 100th ParkRun cake with runners and members of the Polokwane ParkRun.

POLOKWANE – Mark Markgraaff, one of the oldest members of the Polokwane ParkRun, made history on March 30 by participating in his 100th ParkRun as a timekeeper.

The 78-year-old has been with ParkRun Polokwane for several years and helps them with time keeping and general logistics.

He says one of the things he enjoys doing is cheering on the runners and walkers at their various events.

”I am a timekeeper and I find joy in volunteering my services. I cheer runners on and make them feel good about themselves. We have beginners and you could see that after the running sessions, some look dejected a bit and that is where I come in. I cheer them on and encourage them to keep on training and running for the best times.”

Markgaaff said he was happy with the number of runners that participated in the event on his historic day.

”We had over 80 runners from Polokwane and neighbouring regions. It was a good turnout given the Easter weekend. I am not a runner myself. I just go to the gym and work out, but it is good to see people putting fitness first and we would love to see more people participating in ParkRun activities.”

As part of his milestone celebration, Markgraaff shared his 100th ParkRun cake with runners and members of the Polokwane ParkRun.
