Polokwane City FC vie for top PSL prize

Polokwane City Football Club and eight other teams vie for the prize of R8m in the MTN8 competition.

POLOKWANE – Polokwane City Football Club made history in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) by becoming the first team from the city to finish in the top eight bracket of the league in their maiden season.

City beat TS Galaxy in their last match of the league played at the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex on May 25.

Their achievement will see them competing for R8m in the MTN8 competition together with eight other top teams.

Tincy Tema, chief operations officer of the team said they were happy to achieve one other objective in the league.

“We had a good run in the league and what makes us even happier is that we did not change the squad. We played all the matches of the league with players that promoted the team from the Motsepe Foundation to the Premier Soccer League. Credit should go to the technical team lead coach Phuti Mophafe who has been exceptional. He is one of the underrated coaches in the league and is doing very well. The team has responded well to his coaching philosophy and we look forward to the next season.”

Tema added all players are still on holiday and will report back for a training camp in July.

“We gave them a break so they can spend quality time with their families. We believe that they will use this time to pause, relax and reflect. We hope they come back next season with renewed energy and zeal. We want to compete in the MTN 8 and I think we will do well.”
