LIMPOPO – Fulufhelo Masindi, a 58-year-old grandmother from Miluwani village near Sibasa, continues to inspire as an active runner.

She recently participated in the Comrades Marathon on June 9, joining over 20 000 runners in the race from Durban’s City Hall to Pietermaritzburg.

The Comrades Marathon, the oldest and largest ultramarathon in the world, awarded Masindi the prestigious Green Number medal. This accolade is given to runners who reach significant milestones, and in Masindi’s case, it celebrates her decade of participation in the event.

In addition to her running achievements, Masindi is a hawker in Sibasa.

Her dedication to both her sport and her community earned her special recognition from Thulamela Mayor Athongozwidivha Rambuda.

During the State of the Municipal Address on Friday, June 21, held at George Phadagi Hall in Thohoyandou, Rambuda honoured Masindi for her accomplishments. He praised her as a Comrades Marathon runner and a multi-award winner in the Limpopo Athletics Masters Marathon.

Masindi’s running journey began in 1984 when she was a learner at Makwarela Primary School, continuing her years at Raluswielo Secondary School.

Over the years, she has competed in various marathons, including the Two Countries and Land of Legend marathons, and still feels strong and healthy.

“I feel honoured to be recognised by the Thulamela Municipality,” said Masindi. “I urge young people to come to me for good running skills. If you keep exercising, you contribute to a healthy lifestyle.”
