Tommies’ hockey hero, Tshepo Chokoe

Tshepo's hockey journey began in Gr 1 and now, at 18, he's a force to be reckoned with, playing for Limpopo's u/18A team with passion and dedication.

POLOKWANE – At just 18 years old, Tshepo Chokoe has already made a significant mark in the world of hockey. His journey began in Gr 1 at Pietersburg Comprehensive School, where he first picked up a hockey stick.

Today, Tshepo proudly plays for Limpopo, driven by a passion that has grown stronger over the years.

Currently a learner at Technical High School Tom Naudé, Tshepo’s talent was recognised early on by his primary school hockey coach, who introduced him to club hockey since the school does not offer it as a sport.

“I play for neighbouring schools as well,” Tshepo shares. “I have been playing for Limpopo since I was u/13 and recently played in my last IPT tournament for the year. Representing Limpopo’s u/18A team is phenomenal, with all the exposure to other players and different styles of hockey. It is an amazing feeling.”

The IPT, hosted in Bloemfontein from June 16-21, was a highlight for Tshepo.

He describes the thrill of playing hockey: “The best part is the adrenaline and excitement. When I play hockey, I look to improve my skills and better my playing style. The feeling you get as you dribble the ball, make all the runs, and then score a goal is indescribable. The joy of winning a game, knowing you gave it your all, and inspiring young players by showing them that this is real, not just something you see on YouTube, is amazing.”

Tshepo acknowledges the challenges of the sport, particularly its speed and physicality.

“Sometimes it’s hard to keep up with the level of play. But I am not one to give up. Letting go is not in my nature, so I keep pushing forward,” he says.

He also points out that hockey is often underestimated.

“Most people think hockey is easy until they watch or try it. It was not easy to get to where I am now,” Tshepo notes.

In addition to these hockey achievements, Tshepo is also a member of Tom Naudé’s cycling team, showcasing his versatility and dedication to sport.
