The Orimali Projects Soccer Tournament showcases local talent and provides economic benefits to the rural community of Ha-Makuya.

LIMPOPO – The rural village of Ha-Makuya was abuzz with excitement as the Orimali Projects Soccer Tournament took place over the weekend.

Gondeni Big Cat clinched the championship title after a thrilling 5-4 penalty shoot-out win against Masisi Young Stars.

Livhuwan “Lebo” Phosiwa, the mastermind behind the tournament, organised the event with the aim of giving back to his community and engaging the youth in positive activities.

The two-day annual tournament, held at the Makuya-Domboni sports ground, featured eight teams from Ha-Makuya and surrounding communities.

This year’s tournament awarded the champion, Gondeni Big Cat, with R7 000 in cash, a soccer kit, a trophy, 25 medals and a ball.

The runners-up, Masisi Young Stars, received R4 000 in cash, a kit and a ball, while the third-place team was awarded R1 000 and a ball. Additional awards were given for player of the tournament, goalkeeper of the tournament, and recognition of two outstanding community members in sport.

Phosiwa emphasised the broader impact of the event, noting how it empowered rural men and women by providing opportunities to sell food, thereby supporting their families.

“The tournament not only kept young people engaged but also helped local vendors boost their businesses,” he added.

Nditsheni Nemakhavhani, captain of Gondeni Big Cat, attributed their success to hard work, regular practice, and listening to their coach. “We will use the prize money to develop our team further,” Nemakhavhani said.

The Orimali Projects Soccer Tournament not only showcased local talent but also reinforced community spirit and provided economic benefits to the residents of Ha-Makuya.
