PEPPS teacher climbs SA netball ranks

Eddie Manyathela excels in netball, earning 'Best Defensive Player' and representing South Africa at the Fast5 World Series in New Zealand.

POLOKWANE – Eddie Manyathela, a teacher at PEPPS who has been inspiring learners with his passion for teaching and sport, has made a name for himself in the world of netball.

Manyathela, who started playing netball in 2015 while studying at the University of Limpopo, currently plays for the Rising Stars Netball Club in the Capricorn district.

Since joining PEPPS in 2017, where he teaches mathematics and physical sciences to Gr 9 and 10 learners, Manyathela has balanced his teaching career with a successful netball journey.

He participated in the SA nationals from September 22-25, where he represented Capricorn District and helped his team secure fourth place in the A division. His defensive skills earned him the best defensive player of the tournament award.

Manyathela’s netball achievements continued this month, when he and his team clinched a third place at the Fast5 World Series in New Zealand, proudly representing South Africa on the international stage. Just last week, on November 23, he helped the Siyadlala Superleague Club secure first spot in the A division.

Despite these successes, Manyathela remains humble and dedicated to supporting the next generation of netball players. “I would advise aspiring netball players at PEPPS, male or female, to pursue netball with passion and dedication. It takes a lot of hard work and effort, but it is rewarding and fun,” he said.

Looking ahead, Manyathela has been invited to trial for the South African National Squad on December 5. If selected, he will compete in the African Cup, which will be hosted in Namibia from December 9-14. His determination and achievements both on and off the court continue to inspire learners and fellow athletes alike.
