Vhembe’s Ambani (14) makes waves in SA women’s soccer
Currently playing for the South African u/17 women's soccer team, Ambani is proving her mettle on the national stage.
LIMPOPO – One of Vhembe’s brightest young sport talents, Ambani Raphadana (14) from Tshiozwi, continues to make waves in South African women’s football.
Currently playing for the South African u/17 women’s soccer team, Ambani is proving her mettle on the national stage.
This December, Ambani was selected to represent South Africa in the Cosafa u/17 women’s championship, held in Johannesburg from December 4-13. In September, she participated in the u/15 CAF tournament in Namibia as part of the South African School Football Championship team, alongside her teammate, goalkeeper Maanda Ramadwa.
A Gr 8 learner at Sinthumule High School, Ambani also plays as a midfielder for the Sinthumulekutama Ladies in the Sasol Limpopo Women’s League. Despite her achievements, she remains grounded and passionate about the growth of women’s football in South Africa.
Ambani acknowledges the challenges faced by women’s football, including limited opportunities for tournaments and international competition. “Women’s football hasn’t received the same opportunities as other sport, like men’s soccer and rugby,” she said.
For Ambani, soccer is more than just a game. It has shaped her character and helped her focus on her goals. “It has taught me to be strong and unapologetic about my capabilities as a young girl.”
Her dreams go beyond her current success. Ambani aspires to play for Banyana Banyana and eventually join a professional overseas team.
She encourages young people to stay focused, avoid negative influences like drugs and crime, and work toward making meaningful contributions to their communities.
“The youth must prepare themselves for careers that will benefit them in life. Discipline is key, and education is crucial for the future. Those with talent must balance their careers with education because sport won’t last forever.”
