Polokwane hosts 5th Diabetes Awareness tennis tourney

The Diabetes Awareness Tennis Tournament promotes early diagnosis, healthy lifestyles, and support for those living with diabetes.

POLOKWANE – Tennis coach and founder of the Swing Doctor Tennis Club Polokwane, Iggy Matsiela, in partnership with the Centre for Diabetes, led by Dr Kaamila Ismail, hosted the fifth Diabetes Awareness Tennis Tournament last Saturday.

Hosted at the Mitchell House tennis courts as the venue, the Swing Doctor Tennis Club Polokwane and Lebowakgomo Junior Tennis Club teams played against each other.

Matsiela told Review that the motivation behind hosting this tournament comes from his late dad, William who passed away in 2010.

“He lived with diabetes for a long time and through all of that he still remained positive and strong. That’s why he’s my biggest inspiration into hosting such events.”

During the tennis tournament, the Centre for Diabetes team conducted glucose tests throughout the day and also donated prizes to the tennis winners.

“We wanted to educate the community about the importance of early diagnosis, promote healthy lifestyles to prevent the disease, and support those living with diabetes to minimise the risk of complications as well as maintain health and well-being,” Matsiela said.
