Polokwane Bowls Club hosts lively pairs competition

The Polokwane Bowls Club hosted a pairs competition with seasoned player Jules Coetzer sharing his expertise and coaching new players.

POLOKWANE – The Polokwane Bowls Club in Suid Street buzzed with activity last Saturday as players competed in a pairs competition, showcasing skill and camaraderie in the timeless sport of lawn bowls.

Among those attending was Jules Coetzer (88), a seasoned former player, club president, and umpire who retired from playing at 86. A passionate advocate for the sport, Coetzer said it is important to maintain the club’s green for optimal play:

“A well-maintained bowling lawn can last longer before needing renovation. Investing time in the turf ensures a perfect and healthy green for years to come.”

Coetzer, who served on all the club’s committees and worked as a greenkeeper, also highlighted the necessity of wearing the correct footwear to protect the lawn’s condition.

The club’s growing membership has brought new energy and opportunities. Coetzer noted the convenience of having experienced members coach newcomers, which helps improve skills and elevate game performance.

He explained the game of pairs as a format involving two players per team, alternating with three or four bowls each.

Having been part of the club for over 30 years, Coetzer expressed his deep affection for the sport and admiration for the players:

“I envy those who can still get up and play. At my age, I’ve lost my balance, but my love for bowls remains strong. Well done to all the players for a fantastic game.”
