Mzansi Athletics Club celebrates 8th anniversary

Mzansi Athletics Club hosts the back-to-school race, attracting over 1 000 runners and plans to make it a Comrades qualifier next year.

POLOKWANE – Mzansi Athletics Club (Mzansi AC) celebrated its 8th birthday in style, hosting their second annual Mzansi AC Anniversary Back-to-School Race at the Peter Mokaba Stadium last Saturday.

The event brought together over 1 000 runners from near and far, all eager to participate in the half-marathon and other distances.

The race featured well-stocked water points to keep runners hydrated and entertained along the route. Club chairperson Rambiyana Bilisi shared exciting plans for the future: “Next year, we’re looking to elevate the race to a Comrades qualifier, based on the positive feedback we’ve received.”

Participants praised the event’s organisation, with one elite runner noting, “The Mzansi birthday race was fantastic – plenty of water points, visible marshals, and a well-marked route.”

Coach Lufuno Mudau expressed gratitude for the support that made the event a success: “We thank God for the good weather and everyone who donated or contributed to the back-to-school campaign. This event wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of our volunteers, marshals, EMS, registration team, security personnel, and, of course, the runners.”

The day wasn’t just about running – it was also an opportunity to give back and grow the club. Mzansi AC registered 25 new members, many of whom participated in the 5km fun run.

These members will soon join the Couch to Comrades training programme, designed to prepare them for long-distance running and, potentially, the iconic Comrades Marathon.

The event perfectly blended community, fitness, and celebration, ensuring that Mzansi AC’s 8th birthday will be remembered fondly.
