Noordelikes: 60 years of rugby passion and dedication

Noordelikes Rugby Club marks 60 years of passion, development, and community spirit, nurturing young talent in Polokwane’s rugby scene.

POLOKWANE – Noordelikes Rugby Club has been a cornerstone of rugby in Polokwane for 60 years.

Rugby, a braai and something to drink are part of the South African rugby culture, and for many in the community, Saturdays are spent watching games at Noordelikes’ home ground in Mara Street.

The club recently merged with Kruinies Rugby Club, bringing in new players and opportunities.

Coach Johan van Ravesteyn highlights the club’s dedication to development, with a strong focus on nurturing young talent.

As the largest development club in the Limpopo Northern Region competition, 70% of Noordelikes’ players come from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. The club has three teams competing in the Boet Fick Senior League under the Limpopo Blue Bulls Rugby Union.

The first team plays in Boet Fick Senior league one, the second team in league two, and the third team in league three, which also includes the u/21 Young Rebels development team.

Being an amateur club, Noordelikes relies entirely on sponsorships to cover costs such as game jerseys, training gear, and transport for players. Van Ravesteyn says sponsorships are valuable in keeping the club running and ensuring young players have opportunities to compete.

With a strong squad and experienced coaches, the club is optimistic about the season ahead. Most of the coaches and players hold level two world coaching qualifications, ensuring high-quality training and development. Training sessions take place every Tuesday and Thursday from 18:00-20:00.

On April 12, Noordelikes will host the annual Rugby Day featuring a north/south derby, a highlight on the local rugby calendar.

As the club celebrates six decades of rugby, it remains committed to fostering talent and strengthening its legacy in the community.
