Vhembe’s long-distance star wins marathon title

Timothy Munzhelele stuns at Mall of the North Marathon, taking first place and setting sights on Comrades glory this June.

LIMPOPO – Vhembe’s own marathon champ, Timothy Munzhelele from Makonde, made his hometown proud this weekend after clinching first place at the Mall of the North Marathon in Polokwane.

Running for Vhembe Athletics Club, Timothy clocked in at 2:29:03, beating nearly 2 000 athletes in this tough race.

Back home, he received a warm welcome from family, friends, and fans. But the humble champ is already setting his sights on something even bigger – the Comrades Marathon in June.

“This was a tough one, but I had a good race. I’m just happy and excited – it still feels like a dream!” he said.

His teammate and fellow runner, Takalani Mavhona, had nothing but praise:

“Timothy really deserves this. He’s represented Vhembe and Limpopo with pride. We’re all so proud of him. Hopefully, his win inspires more young runners from our area to chase their dreams.”

Timothy says discipline and humility are key. “People often say Vhembe athletes do well because of the hardships we face, but I believe it’s more about what you want in life. You have to be dedicated, stay humble, and always listen to your coach and parents.”

He also gave a heartfelt shoutout to his family for always being in his corner. “They’re my biggest supporters – I couldn’t have done this without them.”

While he keeps pushing forward in his running career, Timothy says the journey isn’t always easy. Like many local athletes, he faces financial challenges, especially with travel and proper gear like running shoes.

He’s currently looking for a sponsor to help lighten the load.
