LTT doctor earns Boston Marathon Six Star Medal

Dr Andy Ramavhanda earns the Six Star Medal after completing all major world marathons, inspiring others with his dedication.

LIMPOPO – Runner and medical doctor Andy Ramavhanda from Louis Trichardt recently achieved a remarkable milestone by earning the prestigious Six Star Medal after completing the Boston Marathon on 21 April.

This medal is awarded to runners who complete all six of the world’s major marathons: New York, Berlin, Chicago, London, Tokyo and Boston.

Ramavhanda’s marathon journey started in 2019 with the New York Marathon, followed by the Berlin Marathon in 2022, the Chicago and London Marathons in 2023, the Tokyo Marathon in 2024, and finally, the Boston Marathon in 2025, marking his completion of the six-star challenge. In addition to these international races, he is also a seasoned participant in local events, including the Comrades Marathon. Remarkably, he only started road running about eight years ago.

Reflecting on his Boston Marathon experience, Ramavhanda described it as a dream come true. “I didn’t know what to expect, but finishing the race was incredible. There are no shortcuts – success requires patience and endurance, built through long hours of training. I usually train on my own without a coach, but I’m considering working with someone in the future.”

His dedication is evident, as he runs at least 10 marathons a year and has already completed eight races this year alone. “Boston proved to me that I can do anything I set my mind to. Mental toughness is just as important as physical readiness. If you’re mentally weak, your performance will suffer,” he said.

Asked how he balances marathon training with his profession, he pointed out the flexibility of the sport. “Running can be done anywhere, even inside your yard. The road is always open. As a doctor, I recommend exercise to everyone, no matter their circumstances. It offers countless health benefits.”

He is now preparing to run the Comrades Marathon for the seventh time in June. To aspiring athletes, Ramavhanda’s message is clear:

“Stay focused. Sport can keep young people active and healthy. With the growing sports industry, they can even consider it as a career, either as athletes or in sports management. Good sportsmanship teaches discipline and responsibility, qualities every young person needs.”
