Oyama Karate hosts grading in Seshego
Oyama School of Karate held its first 2025 grading, promoting students across belt levels after a rigorous evaluation session.
POLOKWANE – The Oyama School of Karate held its first grading of the year at the Ngoako Ramahlodi Indoor Sports Complex in Seshego on May 17.
The session as overseen by shihan Happy Prince Gumede, a seventh dan black belt from KwaZulu-Natal and branch chief of the dojo. A pre-grading session was held on May 16 to prepare the 41 karatekas who would be evaluated.
Among the participants were Kenia Makgoka and Bareng Matlabo, both 13 years old, who were assessed for their first kyu. This is a significant step before they qualify for black belt testing, which requires at least 12 months of further training.
In addition, 11 new students who joined the dojo this year undertook their first grading and were successfully promoted to 10th kyu, earning the right to wear orange belts. Other karatekas were promoted to higher belt ranks, including blue, yellow, green and brown, after a rigorous three-hour session that concluded with several rounds of sparring specific to each level.
Shihan Gumede commended the students on their efforts and dedication, and praised the instructors for their ongoing commitment to both the sport and the organisation.
“Karate should be used for self-defence and fitness. It plays an important role in helping children and adults stay healthy and active, especially in today’s world where unhealthy lifestyles are so common,” he said in his closing address to parents and spectators.
Sensei Peter Malatji also expressed his gratitude to the parents and guardians for their support. He congratulated all students who passed their grading and offered encouragement to those who did not. “Keep training hard and study the techniques. Progress will come with time and effort,” he advised.
