Limpopo Baobab tourney serves up junior tennis action
Young tennis talent shone in Polokwane, with nearly 80 players showcasing the province’s growing love for the sport.
POLOKWANE – The Polokwane Tennis Club buzzed with energy on May 23 and 24 with the hosting of the Limpopo Baobab Mini 3 Tournament by local tennis academy SRE Sports, as part of the Tennis South Africa (TSA) Mini Tournament series.
Close to 80 players, including juniors from Limpopo and visiting competitors from provinces like Gauteng, participated in the two-day event.
The tournament provided a valuable opportunity for young athletes to gain match experience and work toward improving their national rankings.
Tournament director Ernest Faver applauded the players for their determination and skill.
“The matches were competitive and the standard of play was excellent. It’s clear that tennis is gaining strong momentum in our region,” he said.
Faver extended a warm thank you to the players, parents, and coaches who travelled to Polokwane to support the event. He also expressed appreciation to the Polokwane Municipality for the use of the venue, noting the wider benefits of hosting such events. “Tournaments like these do more than just promote sport, they also bring people into our city and boost local business,” he added.
Special recognition was given to the younger and less experienced players who took part.
Faver said their eagerness and love for the game were encouraging signs for the future of tennis in the province. “It’s vital that we continue creating welcoming spaces where children can grow their passion for the sport,” he said.
Especially the boys u/12 division saw vibrant competition from local players, including up-and-coming talent NJ Pretorius, Vos Nel-Fouché, Iwan Dreyer, Ntsako Nemvumoni, Ruben Kruger, Liyakhanya Mbita, Matsobane Maja and Rigard Genis.
The tournament reaffirmed its role as a key event on the junior tennis calendar, offering young players both experience and inspiration as they progress in the sport.
