Sport unites and uplifts Vhembe youth
Minister Solly Malatsi praises sport’s role in uniting communities and empowering youth at the Matsila Soccer Tournament.
LIMPOPO – The Minister of Communications and Digital Technology, Solly Malatsi highlighted the unifying power of sport, during the opening of the Matsila Soccer Tournament at the Majosi grounds on Sunday.
Addressing players and spectators, Malatsi said sport plays a vital role in promoting social harmony and shaping the lives of young people. “Sport is an important vehicle to promote harmonious interaction between people,” Malatsi told the crowd. He commended the high level of sports development in both Vhembe and the province, saying it reflects the community’s commitment to youth growth and development.
The minister stressed that participation in sport not only supports physical health but also boosts academic performance. “Children involved in sport tend to perform better in the classroom, which leads to improved academic outcomes in the long run.”
Malatsi, however, also urged young players not to rely solely on sporting success. “Many young people admire athletes and may even leave school to chase a sports career. But sport can be unpredictable. Injuries and career setbacks happen. Education gives you something to fall back on,” he warned.
Chief Livhuwani Matsila, sponsor of the tournament, said the event was created out of a passion for uplifting children. “We don’t have much, but the little we offer can make a real difference,” he said. Matsila also shared plans to involve local business owners in future efforts to grow the community and support young talent. “We’re guiding young players in the right direction. With the right support, some may even reach the national squad one day,” Matsila said.
