POLOKWANE – The South African International Ballet Competition (SAIBC) is proud to share that the Melisa Gilfillan Dance Academy was selected as one of the few outstanding participants from the Limpopo regional round of the International Ballet Competition (IBC).

SAIBC CEO Dirk Badenhorst says these regionals brought together talented young dancers from across the province, and was among the small number chosen to represent Limpopo at the semi-finals and finals.

The Melisa Gilfillan Dance Academy (MGDA) has been invited to take part in the prestigious IBC in Cape Town, taking place from July 28-31.

“It also offers an international stage for emerging talent and creates meaningful opportunities for development in the art of ballet,” Badenhorst said.

This event is recognised globally for its high standard and serves as a platform where young talent is seen by respected professionals from around the world.

The competition has opened doors for many dancers in the past, with previous participants receiving scholarships to leading schools and invitations to elite global ballet events.

“It is a great honour for any dancer to be selected to participate in this event, and we commend you for their achievement and dedication,” Badenhorst remarked.

The academy will have 14 girls; Amelia Marx, Kamogelo Raphela, Alea Olivier, Lumé Heinlein, Alexa Myburgh, Zara Teixeira, Neo Matlou, Lu-vé Venter, Reneilwe Segage, Kurhula Mabuza, Karmien Gilfillan, Lamé Ehlers, Nia Schutte and Gaopalelwe Goeieman, Gabriella Brooks, Nicole Dames and Madelein Brits, representing Limpopo and who will also be taking part in the Nutcracker at Montecasino in June, as well as the SAIBC international competition in July.

The founder of the academy, Melisa Gilfillan told Polokwane Observer that the academy is requesting the community, businesses and individuals for some financial assistance to cover the expenses for each girl who will go represent the province.

The costs for the competition will round off to plus or minus R35 000 each for travelling, accommodation, entry fees, costumes and other logistics.

“Thank you in advance, to our community. We appreciate every effort made,” she said.
