Vhembe female referee aims for PSL and international stage

Inspired by top officials, Ntangaedzeni Mugari is climbing the ranks with dreams of officiating in the PSL and beyond.

LIMPOPO – While many girls her age shy away from male-dominated sporting codes, Ntangaedzeni Mugari from Tsianda village has embraced the challenge by choosing football refereeing as her career path.

Her journey began at Gwamasenga High School, where her love for sport caught the attention of Safa Vhembe Stream D referee selector Nkhumiseni Nyambeni in 2015. After initial tests, Mugari started officiating local matches before moving on to the provincial women’s league, where she impressed match commissioners with her composure and skill.

Her dedication soon paid off. She successfully passed national fitness tests in Gauteng for the Hollywoodbets Super League, earning promotion to the Safa National Women’s League, where she currently serves as a middle referee.

Mugari credits her mentors, particularly Nyambeni, for teaching her life skills and instilling discipline and focus. She also draws inspiration from her role model, former PSL referee and current Fifa official Akhona Makalima.

Looking ahead, Mugari has set ambitious goals: to officiate in the PSL within the next three years and, eventually, at international level. She expressed gratitude to players and officials who supported her growth, even when she made mistakes that affected matches. “I have never faced threats in my career, and I am thankful for the guidance I continue to receive,” she said.

Beyond refereeing, Mugari is passionate about inspiring the next generation. “I am committed to helping and inspiring young people to become excellent sportsmen and sportswomen. I always urge youths to put effort into whatever they do, whether in academics or sport,” she said.
