Polokwane Bowls Club shines as Limpopo hosts first national event

Limpopo’s first-ever hosting of the Bowls SA Mixed Pairs Tournament was hailed a success, with Polokwane praised by Bowls SA.

POLOWKANE – This weekend marked a historic milestone for Limpopo bowls, as the province hosted the Bowls South Africa Mixed Pairs National Tournament for the first time.

The prestigious event was held at the Polokwane Bowls Club.

Representing Limpopo and their home club were Lyn Lambert and Danie le Roux, who delivered an outstanding performance. Despite their best efforts, they missed out on a bronze medal by one ball.

Limpopo currently has only 13 clubs, compared to the 452 clubs across South Africa, making their representation on this national stage even more significant.

According to Annerita Blignaut of the Polokwane Bowls Club, the weekend was a tremendous success. “Bowls South Africa president, David Hamer, attended the event and medal ceremony, where he applauded the club for an event of exceptional standard. He expressed gratitude for the warm Limpopo hospitality and commended the organisers, volunteers, and players for making the tournament a resounding success.”

The national champions were:

• Gold medal: Aidan de Smidt and Nicole Erwee (Johannesburg Bowling Association).

• Silver medal: Brad Robinson and Tara Janse van Rensburg (Natal Inland Bowls).

• Bronze medal: Billy Radloff and Gail Steyn (Eden Bowls).

• Bronze medal: Santjie Olivier and MP Olivier (Boland Bowls).

Blignaut also paid tribute to Jules Coetzer, an honorary member of the club, who passed away a few weeks before the championship.

“Jules played an instrumental role in the early planning and correspondence with Bowls South Africa, helping to secure the bid to host such a prestigious tournament in Limpopo. His contribution and passion will be remembered as part of this achievement.”

She also said the event not only showcased world-class bowls but also put Limpopo on the map as a capable and passionate host of national sporting events.

“The club wishes to extend a heartfelt gratitude to all who made this historic event possible.

”To our volunteers, club members, greenkeepers, the tournament committee, the executive committee, and our valued sponsors, thank you for your dedication and hard work in ensuring an absolutely great event.”
