Limpopo School Cricket builds pathway to pro level

Limpopo Impala Cricket and the Schools Cricket Association are building future stars through structured school leagues across the province.

POLOKWANE – Cricket in Limpopo is flourishing, thanks to the joint efforts of Limpopo Impala Cricket (LIC) and the Limpopo Schools Cricket Association (LSCA).

Katlego Sempe, head of the Youth and Schools Department at LIC, told Review that these governing bodies oversee various school cricket leagues, providing platforms for young players to hone their skills and potentially progress to professional level.

“LIC and LSCA run several leagues catering for different age groups and abilities. For primary schools, there are the big schools league and the medium schools league, divided into north and south Limpopo sections. The winners of each section then face off in a final to determine the overall champion,” Sempe said.

He added that development leagues for u/9 and u/10 players are organised as friendlies to introduce them to hard-ball cricket.

At high school level, the Super League features top cricketing schools and hub teams, including Hoërskool Ben Vorster, Hoërskool Pietersburg, and Merensky Agricultural School.

The A League provides schools with an opportunity to earn promotion to the Super League by winning matches.

“The primary purpose of these leagues is to identify and nurture young talent, giving provincial coaches the opportunity to scout promising players,” said Sempe.

“The system also creates opportunities for learners with developing skills to compete against stronger players. By participating, learners sharpen their abilities and improve their chances of provincial selection.”
